I welcome the new tendering process for the event centre. The centre is a key piece of infrastructure that this city needs.

However no discussion has taken place with councillors on the new tendering process despite pleas for information over the last few weeks. It is also surprising to see that e.4m from Council funds has now been ‘Officially’ set aside for the eventual chosen site.  Up to now, tentative figures have been bounced around but nothing set in stone but now on the new tender document, a figure is set. No one has approached the elected members of Council to tell us this in person. I have had to read it in the press. As an elected member, this is a disgrace. One of our powers is to control and debate value for money for the Council’s expenditure.

The Lord Mayor needs to convene a special meeting to discuss the parameters of the councillors’ role in this the new tendering process. Spending e.4m of e.14m means that councillors ‘Now’ have a significant say in the choice of site. The event centre does not need to become a political football, which make no mistake about it is about to become. The new tendering process demands a transparent process where all sides, Councillors, City Hall officials, the external review committee and the proposed developers all know the parameters of the new process. The whole process will unravel again closer to decision time again if parameters are not set now.

Call for National Diaspora Centre for Cork

   A national diaspora centre for Cork needs to be pushed for especially in light of the recent proposals from Drogheda and Limerick for one, according to Cllr Kieran McCarthy. Almost 90,000 overseas visitors came to Ireland last year to trace their Irish roots, spending as much as €61m in doing so, according to Failte Ireland. More than half of those visiting the country to trace their Irish heritage are from North America. Failte Ireland expects that more overseas visitors will come to the country to trace their Irish roots next year once ‘The Gathering’ kicks off. ‘The Gathering’ is a series of events and festivals where people can trace their heritage. Failte Ireland is examining how and where a National Diaspora Centre could be built in Ireland, after being requested to do so by the Minister for Tourism Leo Varadkar.

     Cllr McCarthy noted that Cork needs to be on that list. “I believe that Cork city, should be the location for a new Irish Diaspora Centre, which will serve as the hub in Ireland for returning diaspora members. Over 250,000 people emigrated Cork Harbour after the Great famine with countless others during the twentieth century. It is estimated that the Irish diaspora is comprised of approximately 71 million Irish people across the world. The Irish Global Diaspora Centre is a major national and international undertaking. A centre like this can act as a major and sustainable stimulus for Cork into the future. We need to up our game in our discussions with all stakeholders in order to try and progress this project for Cork. I believe that progressing this project would help to re-invigorate any area of Cork City, while also boosting tourism”.

McCarthy’s Grants for Marketing Course

Cork City Enterprise Board is running a “Cost Effective Marketing” course. It will run on Thursday 8 November and Thursday 15 November 2012 2012, 9.30am – 5pm. Ballinlough based Councillor,  Kieran McCarthy, through his ward funds, is offering to fund three places on this course for interested persons living in the south east ward of Cork City.

This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and tools required to market their products/service/business more effectively. The workshop will be followed up with a one-to-one session with the trainer. During the programme participants will: Identify their target customers, differentiate their offering from the competition and determine the most appropriate marketing technique to reach these target customers, build a took kit of effective marketing tools to use in their own business, work on a sales and marketing plan for their business for the next 12-24 months. Areas covered include consumer and market research, how to reach your customers and grow sales, branding, cost-effective marketing techniques such as web, e-marketing, social networking, exhibitions, sponsorship of events, endorsements, PR and targeted advertising. What a very enjoyable evening! -The final of McCarthy’s Community Talent Competition. It was great to see this project taking off again this year with 85 acts auditioning and 18 going through to the final last night at the Clarion Hotel (Wednesday 10 May 2012). McCarthy’s ‘Make a Model Boat Project’, 2012

Cllr. Kieran McCarthy has launched the annual McCarthy’s ‘Make a Model Boat Project’. Aimed at Cork students in primary and secondary schools, it is about making a model boat at home from recycled materials and bring it along for judging to the Atlantic Pond on Sunday afternoon, 10 June 2012, 2pm. The event is being run in association with Meitheal Mara’s upcoming Ocean to City Maritime Festival and the Lifetime Lab.  There are two categories, one for primary and one for secondary students. There are prizes for best models and the event is free to enter. Cllr. McCarthy, who is heading up the event, noted “I am encouraging creation, innovation and imagination amongst our young people, which are important traits for all of us to develop”. McCarthy’s Make a Model Boat Project is part of a series of events for the Ocean to City Maritime Festival at the heart of which is the annual rowing race from the mouth of Cork Harbour to the City. The race is open to all types of traditional & fixed seat rowing boats The organising team is part of Meitheal Mara based at Crosses Green House, Cork. Meitheal Mara is a registered charity working in the areas of boatbuilding, rowing and woodwork training with various groups including youth & the long-term unemployed. McCarthy’s Upcoming Community Projects

            ‘McCarthy’s History in Action Project will take place at the early summer school fair of Our Lady of Lourdes National School, Ballinlough on Sunday 13 May, 2012 2.30-5pm. This event, supported by Cllr. Kieran McCarthy, will bring history alive for all the family, with the participation of re-enactment groups, storytellers and more.

As part of ongoing research project into the local history of the south-east ward, Cllr Kieran McCarthy will conduct a historical walking tour of Blackrock Village on Sunday 13 May 2012, 6.30pm, leaving from Blackrock Castle (approx 1 ½ hours, free event). The earliest and official evidence for settlement in Blackrock dates to c.1564 when the Galway family created what was to become known as Dundanion Castle. Over 20 years later, Blackrock Castle was built circa 1582 by the citizens of Cork with artillery to resist pirates and other invaders. These and a range other themes will be discussed on the walking tour.

Cork City Council invites applications for Economic Proposition Report on Cork Docklands

Cork City Council has advertised for a multi-disciplinary consultancy team to prepare an economic proposition report for the Cork Docklands. The expertise involved will be led by Global Business, economic and financial consultants and will include Marketing & Branding, Planning, Urban Design, Engineering and Property expertise.

 

The purpose of this project is to deliver a report to Cork City Council on the long-term positioning of Cork Docklands as a “Location for Global Economic Investment”.

 

Key outputs will be:

 

1.     A thorough economic assessment which will include the identification of the key employment sectors and functions from existing and emerging markets (indigenous and foreign).

2.     Development of a branding and marketing strategy for the promotion of Docklands nationally and internationally as an investment location.

3.     Consideration of key funding and financial issues associated with the rollout of the Docklands regeneration Project

4.     A phased implementation strategy for an initial 5-10 year period and also for the long-term development of Docklands.

 

This report will build on the previous Economic Study 2007 and give an up to date recommendations on developing Cork Docklands an international location for business and economic investment.

 

Pat Ledwidge, Director of Services, Docklands, Cork City Council says:

 

“While we are experiencing poor economic conditions at present, Cork must be ready when the economy improves in the next few years.  Cork Docklands is a significant asset to the city and nationally and will be a key contributor to the growth of Cork in the years to come in terms of facilitating business and economic growth for the city and the region and also providing for residential population. This report will be a key element of delivering a strategy to increase existing and bring new global business to Cork.”

 

This study is being co-funded by Cork City Council and the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government.
