Cork City Council are pleased to announce the successful restoration and reinstatement of Shandon Clock and its chimes.
The original historic ‘cage clock’ mechanism, built by Mangan of Cork in 1846, has been carefully cleaned and repaired by local clock specialists, Stokes Clocks & Watches Ltd under the supervision of the City Architect’s Department of Cork City Council. The accuracy of the clock is supported by an additional ‘electronic movement’ which discreetly helps to synchronise its four faces.
The clock chimes have been ringing both hourly and quarterly through 24 hours for approximately six weeks, reinstating the normal operation that prevailed before the clock fell silent approximately a year ago.
External maintenance and repairs to the clock faces are proposed to follow on a phased basis over the coming years, as funding allows.
